San Rafael was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Sonoma, California. The city was named after the San Rafael de Toluca Mexican land grant that the settlers received. During the Spanish Period, San Rafael was known as Mission San Rafael Arcángel (one of the first California missions), operated by Father Luis Gil until the land grant. In its early American years, San Rafael was a small agricultural community. However, the city began to grow rapidly in the late 1800s due to the construction of the North Pacific Coast Railroad. This made San Rafael a convenient stop for travelers between San Francisco and the rest of the country.
Today, San Rafael is a thriving city with plenty to offer its residents. The downtown area is home to many shops and restaurants, as well as several art galleries.
